This weekend, Mark will be mostly making me a brooder. Any ideas and tips would be most appreciated.

Is it okay to use a normal anglepoise type lamp with a normal (not energy saving) bulb in it, to provide heat?

I'm beginning to get just a little excited now, and will start pacing on Tuesday Very Happy

sorry, can't help on this, but I can feel your excitement. I don't know about the lamp, but when you see pictures of chicks in brooders they always seem to be under a red light, is that to protect their eyes or something?

The red lighting comes from and infrared heat lamp. That is what I use. My brooder.....a big, deep, clear rubbermaid storage container. Liners...I use puppy training pads...very easy to clean up mess, just roll them up and insert a new one. Wink

We always use normal bulbs & not had any problems yet. The red & dull emitter ones are probably used to give the chicks a day & night difference, but our chicks seem to sleep OK with a normal bulb on all the time.

One thing we did find, was to use 2 bulbs because if 1 blows then it won't go completely cold with still 1 live. It's just something we have found useful.

My brooder is a fish tank (empty of course) Laughing with a clip on light over the top. I use a red bulb - always thought the normal bulb was a bit bright for the chicks Smile
I havent had to use a brooder this year - had broodies to do the work for me Wink But, this morning, I have some quail hatching, so will need to transfer them later to my brooder Laughing
Good luck with your hatch NannyP Wink Very Happy

Yes, Summayah, problem is, that's this room and it get's incredibly hot on hot days, and very cold at night, so not a good idea. I wouldn't want them expiring in the heat during the day Confused I'd love to have them in here, they could appear on Webcam etc Laughing I'll try to make it a moveable feast, so that they can come in here with me in the evenings, and then spend the day somewhere cooler, probably the landing Laughing
