Ok a recipe tip and a question:

recipe - a friend of mine makes an awesome upside down cake with rhubarb and passion fruit on the bottom/ top depending on which way up it is at the time! - got to be tasted to be believed!

question - I need to move my rhubarb - will it survive a move at this time of year? We are behind the most of you in the growing season here.

Julia

I've moved rhubarb at completely the wrong times of year and it has always survived if kept well watered. I'd risk it if i were you. As you say you being that far north you are a bit behind and so I think you'll get away with it.

IMHO I would suggest you plant it and feed it up for a bumper crop next year. Taking the stems off it this year might be a bit too much for it - it needs those leaves to turn the sunlight into food to grow into a big strong plant...

City Chick is right, crop lightly - preferably not at all - in the first year. You will be rewarded in the second with a much better crop.

If you're ever passing this way we'll have loads of rhubarb this year..

it must never be pulled (not cut )the first year as its a shallow rooter it needs a whole year to get really going but it is worth the wait if you mulsh it always leave a 6 inch cicrle round the stem and water well to start it on its way...............and by the way sieved rhubarb stirred in vallina icecream an old mans idea of heaven.luv.mojo
