Hope this is ok to put here, if not please move to where appropriate.
Hugh has a campaign for commercial chicken farming going. Promoting Free range/birds raised for the table to grow slower and have outside access rather than the overcrowded broiler houses we have today.

Signatures are required if you're willing, regarding banning battery production.

Thanks for putting the link on here Bhindi.
I received the email about it earlier this evening but didn't have time to do it.
I have signed already.
PS - I have merged these 2 threads regarding the same topic. |

Hi got asked to repost the link for Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's campaign against intensive chicken farming for supermarket chickens.
I know I prefer to have happier healthier chickens than the darkened conditions potraid.

| Much as I dislike the concept of battery farming, without a ban on importing battery produced eggs, what will a ban on UK production do, other than put UK farmers out of business? |

Signed.
Come on everyone, surely this is a matter close to all our hearts.
It's not about putting farmers out of business, but more like educating the consumers and steering them in the direction of free-range/organic chicken. If people don't want to buy battery eggs or intensively farmed meat, it won't be imported. Maybe then farmers will change their methods and adopt a more ethical approach to rearing chickens for both eggs and meat to suit consumer demands.
Why stop at just chickens. Anyone aware of the conditions in which pork is grown?
Rant over, I'll step down now! |

I signed too, but I think the ban should extend to all imports.
Give the Brtitish egg and Poultry producers a chance |

Sorry I am VERY new to this Forum, but apart from trying to get through to the public about the conditions that poultry and pigs are kept in, I feel that a lesson has got to be learned by the Supermarket giants somehow, that we aren't willing to put up with this any longer. Maybe that sounds like a newbie being a know-all, I don't mean to sound that way, but like someone else has just said, we have to start somewhere and I don't know where else to start.
I have got mad about this and I aim to make sure that neither I nor my family every have to eat meat or eggs produced in this way again.
There was another programme on BBC3 last night (or was it the night before?) showing the slaughter of 8 week old suckling pigs. OMG that was a horrible thing to watch. First roasting chickens being slaughtered at 39 days of age and then pigs being slaughtered and cooked and EATEN in a restaurant overlooking the abattoir, at 8 weeks of age.
Sorry I am ranting now too!
Sandra
