It is illegal to feed them as they are vermin, and when towns get overun with them they catch them and release them in the wild (also illegal) which is not fair on the foxes who have always been fed or scavenged out of bins. You can tell a (dead) town fox by the rotteness of it's teeth. I'm sorry you didn't have your 12 bore with you too.
