From The BBC

Quote:
The first-ever case of Bluetongue disease in Britain has been found in a cow near Ipswich, Suffolk.

Defra officials confirmed discovery of the insect-borne virus, which is usually found around the Mediterranean.

All ruminants, which include cattle, sheep, goats and deer, can be infected, but the viral infection is not thought to pose a risk to human health.

Since July there have been nearly 3,000 cases in Northern Europe, fuelling fears of its arrival in the UK.

There have been so many of these things recently, I've decided to rename the Avian Flu forum the "Avian Flu and Farm Livestock Diseases" forum.

We used to have about 60 breeding ewes- mainly pedigree Texels. With my Father getting older and slower, and the fact that there was a lot of work for no return we have now cut them back to ten. I am so relieved as the livestock situation is really quite dire. I feel so sorry for all the farmers who are trying to make a honest living out of it. They have had so many setbacks. We sold our lambs just days before the ban came back into force.

Foot & Mouth virus survives better in the cold than it does in the heat Confused Confused
But cold may help the Bluetongue.

Debs- I hope all goes well for you at the sales tomorrow. Let us know what the trade is like. I will ask the Hermit to keep his ears open as well.

All the best
Tony
