we are trying to sort out the drainage in our field as it is very poor in certain places and but we need to re route our stream onto the main stream as the water is currentley soaking through the ground and going everywhere we want to use some of that black corrugated piping stuff like you see when they are doing roadworks etc piled on the side

the question i have is what is it called and where can i get some from where is the cheapest supplier and how much should i expect to pay for each section?.

im sure my animals will be much happier once i get it sorted we have dug the trench already and we intend on getting some pigs in the near future so it has to be right for when they use the ground as i dont want any accidents Smile

Colloquially known as land drain - officially perforated plastic piping. Usually comes in 80mm diameter, though can be larger, and in 25m rolls. Cost approx £1.50 / m.

Long term, it's good to combine this with a geo-membrane to avoid soil particles filtering into the pipe and blocking it. And obviously you bed the pipe in clean gravel.

As for suppliers - builders merchants stock it, as do some agricultural merchants.

Your cost per metre then needs to include pipe, gravel, and potentially digger hire and geo-membrane.

There's a lot of useful info on this site: www.pavingexpert.com/drain03.htm. I spoke to the proprietor about 18 months ago and he stressed that you must be aware of the possibility of over draining and thereby creating problems during summer months when (in normal years) rainfall is lower.

Good luck with your installation.

Cheers,

Colin
