What d'you think did this? Had a little call duck the other day, just the same but head missing. Breast very delicately picked clean, wings still on body. Not really fox work is it
Duck on the right was sitting, went missing yesterday. Found Muscovy on the Island.

Mink? (or one of the same family?) Otter?
I agree they don't look like fox kills. |

| certainly looks like mink are you near a river ? you need to get the fisheries to set traps if so, good luck in catching the culprit |

| Jan, that second duck (the brown one) looked just like that pigeon I found...only the pigeon was headless. There were feathers in the tree above it...but I cant imagion anything big enough to go for a duck would eat it up a tree! |

| One could certainly be a bird of prey - they go for the soft bits once they've immobilised their prey. I had to dispatch a partly eaten Cream legbar after a buzzard strike - not nice. The other one could well be mink as I believe they drown their prey if they can, so could strip the neck in the process & carry on once dead. |

Looks like they both fell victim to mink.

Thats really interesting henwife. Ive found 3 drowned muscovies this week but not a mark on them. I thought it was oversexed drakes |

| That's definitely mink - I've watched them feed like that (through binoculars). |

Everything is pointing to mink, I'm setting the traps anyway.
Nothing dead today thank goodness.
Anyone know how a mink kills a big strong duck? |

| They seem to suffocate them - grab them round the front of the neck and hang on. |

So if mink, there should be marks on the throat.Duck on the right was pulled off her eggs and I found the body about 10ft away from the nest. Not buried them yet, OH will dig the hole with JCB to get it deep, so I'll look tomorrow to see if there are any throat marks.
Thanks |
