Had a big sort out today of what we call 'The Hovel'. Built in the 1400's I think some of the stuff has been there since it was built.
Anyway, found this box of patchwork I made about 30years ago and it seemed a shame to chuck it out. A lot of it has been mouse chewed but I have about twice what is on the bed and a whole load of matching material.
Help, what do I do now. Confused

I think the pattern is called log cabin but probably wrong, should they be in some sort of arrangement Confused

and do they have plain strips in between Confused

. I don't think I was very good at it as a couple of the squares are a little bigger than the others. Can I trim these down Confused

Any help will be much appreciated

looks like log cabin to me, and yes some people like to edge the peices with plain fabric, and this helps get the squares accurate before joining. I think as well that you have a light/dark theme going on. looks lovely, good luck! Very Happy

Do I have to put light and dark in some sort of order?

Do you think it would notice if I trimmed down the bigger ones?

If I put plain inbetween it would make it a bit bigger Very Happy

do you think that would look OK Confused

Have just finished putting together my first proper quilt so not an expert - just enthusiastic! That is indeed a log cabin pattern. You can put it together with just the blocks or with fabric between which will make it bigger. I would trim the squares the same size if I were you! Wink

I'm starting to get real enthused Very Happy

Sat and had a think while feeding the ducks and I feel I should have a go at finishing it. I think it will look nice on that bed Laughing

None of the quilts in your links have between bits, all the blocks are joined,so i think as it will be small I should use a simple pattern, just using the blocks I have, then add a border perhaps using the fabric left from the blocks or buying a bit more and backing it in the same.
How does that sound so far? Or do you think it will be better with in between strips to make it bigger? Confused

I put a border around the blocks on my quilt to make it bigger, it's up to you which way you do it though.

Log cabin isnt meant to be sashed (the between block bits) the pattern is meant to run together through the blocks causing colour variations throughout.

You can add borders along the outside to make it bigger, neednt be a single border either, some of my quilts have 4 or 5 borders each between 2 to 5 in just to add size & effect.
