|
|
Hi
I can't believe i'm posting in the livestock forum already...i've only had chickens for 2 weeks...there's no hope!!
I'm researching pigs!!! A friend of mine has offered me some Tamworth weaners, but i've held him off as i need to do some research first!
My main concern is the transport to abbatoir and butcher. Apparently our nearest abbatoir is 40 minutes away and with all the Defra regs regarding movement and transport i don't suppose i could pop them in the boot of the car!!!
So, what do people do? Do i have to buy a trailer or horse box type thing? This would seriously hamper the cost effectiveness of the whole thing!!
What are average costs of slaughter and butchering of a porker?
I'm not in this to make a profit, only for good quality meat that has been fed and treated well, but i don't want a major loss situation either!!
Thanks for any advice!! |

There are people on here who keep pigs and I'm sure they'll be along shortly to help. In the meantime you could try Downsizer's forums and/or this article I've been giving serious thought to keeping pigs but I don't think it's on unless I can 'share' them with someone (one each costs shared etc) do you live anywhere near Chelmsford, by any chance? |

Thanks Rod that's very helpful!
Are those weights the 'meat weight' or live pig weight, don't know what the technical term is!
That's pretty good if it is meat, I've just been on Tesco website who sell their 'finest 'pork, bacon, sausages at a low average of £5 per kilo which makes that amount of meat worth about £735!!
Are you allowed to sell the meat or does it have to be for personal consumption?
May take us a while to consume that amount otherwise!! |

Who'd be a pig farmer?!

Maybe the best way is to provide it yourself if this is anything to go by. |

Does anyone know of a supplier of pork in the North Wales area, organic would be a bonus?.
Supermarket meat is tasteless. |
