what is it with these columbus eggs? somehow they've managed to alter the dietary make up to make eggs better for you. how do they do it? and I wonder how they compare to one of our backyard beauties??

probably not, just wondered cos my mums started on a new diet, the hypo glycemic (or something like that) diet, where your not allowed to eat eggs (among other things), but you are allowed to eat these columbus eggs. I think they're meant to be really high in omega 3 and 6 which is meant to be good for you. Just wondered how they did it.

wouldn't it be something to do with what the chickens are fed (or force fed). I seem to think that citychick might have mentioned feeding her chickens certain seeds which increased the amount of some omegas I think

ohhhhhhh, it's all clear now. did you see that some of the hens are battery "to accomodate all pockets" sorry did i say battery, i meant they were kept in 'laying cages' and the difference being?? don't think i'll be bothering trying them myself. saw them in the super market and they were nearly 50% more expensive than xl free range. think i'll stick to what i know

thanks knobby
you could feed your own hens with the supplements which would increase some of the benefits. I'm sure it was something to do with sunflower seeds plus other seeds. Brain not in gear I can't work out what to search for, sorry

still makes me cross, just another way to get joe public to alleviate their consciences "oh no, I don't eat battery eggs, mine come from hens kept in laying cages". It all ought to be banned!

ahhhhh..... marketing jargon, making bad things sound okay. i bet these people have never been to a chicken farm in their lives, perhaps they should be made to before they start with the pretty worded stuff

Yes, I did look at them before...

I understood the idea to be along the lines that you are what you eat. Therefore if you're a chicken's egg, you can only be as good as the food put into you. Up the essential fatty acid content of the feed (the omega 3, 6 and 9 oils?) and they proved it ups the EFA content of the eggs. So eat those eggs and we get more EFAs in our diet. And EFAs are essential for every cell in the human body and more besides!

Although AFAIK EFAs are destroyed by heat, so if you wanted eggs for hard boiled eggs or cakes etc I think it probably makes it all a bit pointless. Unless you're a chicken, in which case you're probably more healthy...

Anyhow, I gratefully took that wonderful information and now feed extra flax seed and sunflower seeds to my chooks Very Happy

Of course I haven't had my chooks eggs scientifically tested so I am making no claims whatsoever about the superior quality of home grown eggs - but we don't have too, do we! Laughing

Seriously, what about part cooking like in lemon curd or ice cream or soft poached eggs?
