I've just been trying to explain to a work colleague that point of lay is around 18 weeks old, but that most chickens don't start to lay until around 26 weeks. Then I realised I don't know why we call 18 weeks point of lay when it isn't Confused

I thought 18-20 weeks would be pretty accurate POL for hybrids? Which I would guess are still in the majority...

In my vast chicken experience (all 6 of 'em Laughing ) the pure breeds took longer to start laying (around 22 and 26 weeks) but my new hybrids started laying earlier (at about 19 and 21 weeks). And there were certainly eggs being laid already in the barn where all the hybrids were kept when we went to buy them.

The stress of coming to live with us probably put them back a week or two - although we're really nice, honest.... you know what I mean Wink
