Hi All, I'm hoping some one out there will have encountered a similar problem to me. I have 2 lovely chickens (hens) (5 months old now) who are creating a "mess" all around and even in my house. We want the birds to be free range but want to keep them out of our immediate surrounds.
Is there any known way to deter the birds from getting over / under fences (apart from a couple of obvious ones that I can think of!) |

Don't know of any foolproof ones.  High fencing & wing clipping are the only ones that come to mind.  |

| Are your girls laying yet? If no, then usually once they start to lay they seem to settle down a little. Mine would sneak through the smallest gaps you could think of to get in the bit of garden they couldn't have and then cry to come out again ~ having forgotten where they got in! |

| we just have a barrier/low fence of 2ft high chicken wire attached to thin sticks every couple of feet to keep it upright.....as the chickens don't seem to perceive it as a 'solid' barrier with nothing to hop up and perch on they stay within its boundaries. i have had this up for about 3 years and it still works ok....no poo on paths/round back doors etc the only time they have got over is if they've been spooked by something and panicked and have flown over. At that height its pretty easy to step over too. |

| You're right Rubychic. I have a netting fence again held with a few sticks, just to keep the children off a patch really. The girls used to go in from round the back ~ so I put netting on that ~ it has all roses growing up so no chance to sneak in higher. After blocking the gaps at the back the girls never went in again, before that they were happy to eat all the wild flower seeds in there! |
