I have today started one of those mushroom kits. I tried one many years ago and it didn't do anything but I am hoping they have improved.
Brought it from the local garden centre (£4.99) and you put the first bag in the box then add the other bag, add water and put it in a warm dark place. 1 week later move to dark cooler place and you should then be able to see mushrooms coming up after a week.
Anyone else tried them? |

Yes, make sure you keep it damp and cool. Mine was fine until the cool room began to get hotter as the warmer weather came, therefore it dried out quicker. I moved it to a cool spot, took the lid off to re water it, got distracted, came back and a cat had used it for... you know what
Had one small crop from it. But good fun even then |

Make it damp and bury it half into the ground. Do a search on PP forum, Loki gave great information about growing mushrooms.
Do search for last 200 days and show 50 posts, that should work. Off to watch telly |

Yes, not the same after cat has used it I can see that!....should have some evidence of mushrooms in 2 weeks so I figured not long to wait!
(almost the same amount of time for my chicks to hatch - will be a busy weekend!) |

| Did one last year with some success - but the kitchen is not a good place to keep it - it dries up! My dad loves them and has one going that he can't keep up with! |

I had one too, untill I realised the cats were using it as a loo, the mushrooms very quickly lost their appeal. |

| no, same as you, but then I think where will I get a log from, so go off them again. I bought some green compost from there ~ tares ~ none of it grew ~ but I rather suspect the chickens loved it , as they bashed their way through the rather insubstantial fencing round the patch |

The search on PP can still be rather flaky.... it might just be because the posts haven't been sorted yet.
This is (one) thread from Loki called back yard mushroom cultivation
Is that the one you were looking for?
I did have a shitake mushroom log for Xmas (16 months ago). It dried out too much here in our small garden so I took it to Mum's and found it a damp, shady place instead. I haven't looked for a while - I'll have a peep when I'm over there tomorrow. I might have a nice surprise waiting Or a just a damp log |

| thanks bird babe. I followed the link that city chick left and read that thread on pp ~ it was very very interesting. I also got in touch with Loki (the thread starter) and she's given me very clear instructions for what to do. I have to put it in cold water for 12-24hrs ~ to shock it into action and the semi plant it on its side in the shade. So will start it off today, I think |
