AgDay Daily Recap - 10/27/05

TODAY ON AGDAY:
OCTOBER 27, 2005

BIRD FLU: THE USDA OUTLINES ITS EFFORTS IN PROTECTING THE US FROM THE DEADLY AVIAN VIRUS. ON WEDNESDAY, AG DEPARTMENT OFFICIALS SAID THEY HAVE BEGUN TESTING CHICKENS FOR THE BIRD FLU. THE RESPONSE COMES JUST DAYS AFTER SOME SCIENTISTS AND EXPERTS SAY THE BIRD FLU COULD ARRIVE IN ALASKA COME 2006. BUT THE BIGGEST CONCERN IS THE WILD BIRDS MIGRATING TO ALASKA FROM SIBERIA. SINCE LAST SUMMER, SCIENTISTS HAVE BEEN MONITORING LARGE FLOCKS OF BIRDS AND TESTING THEM FOR THE H5-N1 STRAIN IN ALASKA AND CANADA. WHILE THE BIRD FLU HASN’T BEEN DIAGNOSED IN SIBERIA, BORDERING COUNTRIES HAVE DEVELOPED THE DISEASE AND OFFICIALS FEAR IT COULD SPREAD. PURDUE ANIMAL HEALTH EXPERT TODD APPLEGATE SAYS WHILE THERE IS REASON TO BE CONCERNED, WE SHOULDN’T SOUND THE PANIC ALARM YET. SOME EXPERTS BELIEVE IF THE BIRD FLU DOES MAKE IT TO THE US, IT WILL BE THE LOWEST FORM POSSIBLE, MEANING IT WON’T BE AS DEADLY AS THE ONE CURRENTLY RUNNING RAMPANT IN ASIA.
