Betty has just hatched 4 buff orpington chicks - they are very cute but very big compared to their little bantam mum! One still in its egg but mum had had enough so I have it in my incubator now in case it hatches after all...
anyway, the four chicks I have are of very diferent colours: 2 yellow/white, and two caramel brown. Is this related to their sex? I would just pick them up and hav a look but mum is very viscious at the moment and I dont want t upset her!
Would be very grateful if anyone could help me here...do I have 2 boys and 2 girls?
Very Happy |

Hi Anni,
Can I ask where you got the eggs from? Buff Orpington chicks should all be a light yellow colour when they hatch.
There are no differences between the male and female chicks.
At about 4-5 weeks you may be able to tell the difference as the cocks will be starting to develop small combs and wattles.
It sounds as if your chicks may not be pure breed buff orpingtons or maybe even something totally different!
Hope this helps,
Phil |

they should be fairly pure - they are from a friend who only keeps buff orpingtons - unless a rogue has got in there somewhere, but i cant see how! they have been out and about today, two are deffinitely bright white/yellow, one is yelow and one caramel.
Oh well - mith myluck they are probably interloper offspring! |

| the fact that the parents LOOK pure buffys doesnt mean they are i am afraid ...........all breeds throw oldballs now and again.....a product of their mixed parentage in the years past |

sorry Anni but I have to agree with Mojo, it doesn't matter if both parents seem to be buff orps, if there is anything else in their ancestory it can come out in any generation. I'll post some photos tomorrow of pure breed buff orp chicks so you can compare with your chicks.
Regards,
Phil |
