this is one of my utility sussex at a week old - I didn't get a comparison pic but his comb is definitely a lot more developed than the others!
Are the utility birds bred to show secondary sexual characteristics at a younger age so they can be culled out of the flock early? |

| nope its just natures way of making poultry keepers work at it..........my L Sussex utility birds took a long time to mature and quite a long time to sex as relative comb size seemed to change.........in the end i think wattle size helped |

agree with mojo ,utility birds is that you grow both on hens for laying and and cockerals for eatting and then at a later stage hens for boiling fowl ,so both sexes have a reason to grow on ,i love utility birds for this reason, i cannot cull young birds ,and find they are a great way for me  |
