Despite have special fly traps hanging in our trees they are still hanging around the coops. We clean weekly and keep the compost bin and normal bins well away from the coops. Even are huge amount of residential toads and frogs dont help
What do others use to help keep the coops as free of flies as possible? Would it be ok to rub citronella oil into the wood on the outside?
Any tips more that welcome.
Have a great summer solstice,

Is it Saturday? It seems a good few years since we had a really lovely one.
The first year we came here the week before mid summers day was glorious and we were hay making. I remember standing at the field gate with my dog at about 11.00pm watching OH baling the hay. The scent in the air, what seemed like hundreds of bats flying about, and the warmth so late in the day I shall remember for ever. Its never been like it again
As for flies, i dont seem to get too much trouble in the hen house. Now in the house, thats a different story |

| I'll be staying up for the sunrise too - I was thinking about taking the coach up to Scotland and surprising my partner, it'd get in at about the same time the sun rose... I kinda wish I had now... |

It's midsommar here today, it's the biggest party of the Swedish year.
There will be singing drinking and dancing. The dancing goes like this...
Små Grodorna
Here's the words to the song [plus English translation] in case you want to take part...
Små grodorna, små grodorna är lustiga att se.
Små grodorna, små grodorna är lustiga att se.
Ej öron, ej öron, ej svansar hava de.
Ej öron, ej öron, ej svansar hava de.
Kou ack ack ack, kou ack ack ack,
kou ack ack ack ack kaa.
Kou ack ack ack, kou ack ack ack,
kou ack ack ack ack kaa.
English translation:
The little frogs, the little frogs are funny to observe.
The little frogs, the little frogs are funny to observe.
No ears, no ears no tails do they possess.
No ears, no ears no tails do they possess.
Kou ack ack ack, kou ack ack ack,
kou ack ack ack ack kaa.
Kou ack ack ack, kou ack ack ack,
kou ack ack ack ack kaa.
Of course being English I am allergic to dancing round poles and singing about small frogs, so unfortunately I can't join in |

Love to see Nigel & Stephen doing the little frog pole dance!
Back to the flies though - I assume you're using something like the Red Top fly traps Elly? We use them when the flies get really bad but we also use ordinary fly papers in the coop plus the odd spider or 2.
You'll never get rid of flies completely & IMO the Red Tops may actually encourage more flies with the smell they give off! |

Had not thought of the red trap actually attracting more flies
I will put up some of the sticky tape ones where the chickens cannot reach. Maybe we will have to poop scoop more often. We use hemicore as bedding which we have found helps, but flies worry me as I lost a rabbit to fly strike and it is a horrible thimg to happen (we were away for a few days and the person feeding him did not notice he had a sore bottom ).
I think I will rub citronella in the wood as well. Its natural and I've found it works well in the house.
