The last chick of a batch of 7 under a broodie was stuck in its shell today and left all cold (and the mother was busy with the other chicks). So I took this one indoors and warmed it up. You could just see the beak through the small hole in the shell and it would open just a tiny amount every couple of minutes. I gave it a drop or two of water via a syringe and it seemed to gulp it down.
I gradually peeled the shell off and in warm water slowly peeled back the membrane. I did this over 2 hours so as not to shock it. Here's the first pic when almost all the shell is peeled away.

Another hour and it has really come on - but having a big sleep!

It is shuffling about noisily on its bum now - can't stand up yet. But hopefully by tomorrow it will be able to stand and go back with its mum & siblings.

i use cotton wool buds and blood heat water to moisten a dry membrane that way you wont drown a chick.....and they drown in a tiny amount of water

Ye s I had great advice from GillyC about that and I did try very hard with one of my last lot, but he died before he could get out, just not strong enough I suppose. But I am a softy and would always try to help if I could! Wink

They are great photo's and for those like me who unfortunately never get involved in hatching, very interesting pictures that give an insight into the complexities we here so much about with hatching problems.

Thanks

The first batch we hatched last year I left it to the broody hen when I saw one chick that was much weaker than the rest and not keeping up - unfortunately mother followed the stronger ones and the chick died Sad Being tough, hard Yorkshire people, we named it 'Ah' and buried it in the garden Crying or Very sad

So I made up my mind that the next time I saw a weak chick I would intervene. This year we had a chick that was struggling to get out of the shell and I helped out - he became 'r2' (and is now thriving). So the chick above is now inevitably 'r3'.

I must admit each time I have helped I am constantly thinking maybe I should have left it alone - but then I don't think either of them would have made it on their own and at least they are doing well now.

I will always help a struggling chick out if need be. Wink
But we only breed them for ourselves so it doesn't really matter to us. If we were hatching to sell, then maybe I wouldn't....?
