B&Q Quick Dry Exterior Woodstain looks suitable, because it's low odour (got think about my asthma!) and fast drying.

What do you use?

Creosote - always have - clears the lungs very well.

We just used the cheap, water-based one from Wickes. Wink

.......paint/stain/varnish you choose if its safe for kids its safe for chooks.........i use a creasote substitute
