What does everyone think of using bricks cemented to partly make a coop?

Would it be a suitable material? any potential problems,

Would love to see pics of your home made coops just to get ideas

Thanks

That might be me. My girls sleep and nest in a brick shed. Its great for the shelter it gives me in inclement weather. There isn't any concerns on designing in brick whatever the size as long as the design works for the hens. I could put a pic of mine, but somehow I don't think its that scale your thinking of building. Just remember that whatever the size you would want good access to all internal corners.

I used to have problems with the hens picking out the mortar between the bricks of the outhouse - never noticed any ill effects to the birds but started worrying about the structural integrity of the building!

The farm i work on has some un-used stables, one has been converted into a chicken hutch, seems to work.

Yeah it's easy to get carried away!

Most rabbit hutches don't have much headroom if you're getting standard size chickens - but would be good for bantams. I used a rabbit hutch as an isolation pen but it wasn't as secure as the coop and a fox managed to get the isolated one (just after a £60 operation!) So make sure it's secure if you do use one!

I've got a spare coop in desperate need of repair if you're handy - will fit 4 standard or 6 bantams, it's just the house, no run. it's leaky round the nest boxes hence needing repair!

just started the coop today from bricks. then it started to snow.

My dad used to do brick laying so he's doing most of the work. hopefully its going to about 4 feet high and 4 feet wide.

How many chickens will fit in this space - they will be free range.

Kitsune - whats wrong with your coop. im not that good with DIY - but u can use it for spare parts or sell it.

ill try taking pics of the project but how do i put them on here. Any body got any tips that may help.

theres no room for a nesting box so will use boxes with holes in them under the perches.

i need to get the coop done soon coz the chicks in the kitchen are escaping and pooing everywhere.

Hello one and all - have just got started with this chicken keeping stuff, so reading your messages with keen interest.
We have 3 ex battery hens who are discovering the delights of our (inner urban) back garden they are currently living in a plastic shed type thing
and parts of the old rabbit run. They seem to be enjoying it all, although we dont always get any eggs!!!!!!!
Will let you know how they all progress
