After years of thinking about it I've finally decided (received permission!!) to have chickens in the garden, i have a plot of 9 x 5 ft for living quarters and i am a keen woodworker so building a coop is the easy part I have design in mind and have found a wealth of pics in the gallery section however internal design of the house and the dimensions of the entrance are stumping me. Any help would be gratefully received.

Hi,
welcome to the site
the size of the pop-hole really depends on what size birds you will be getting, 10 x 10 inch is big enough for small and mid sized breeds. 12 x 12 if they are the bigger breeds.
the perches should be 2 x 2 with the top corners rounded off, they shoould be higher than the nest box as well.
the usual size for nest box's is 12 inch square, how many you need depends on how many birds you are getting, 1 for every 3 - 4 birds should be enough.
Hope this helps

hello Ornitha and welcome to the site, hope you enjoy yourself here and learn lots.
I agree with what debcat has said. What chickens do you think you will be getting? |

Many thanks to Deb, i will make the entrance on the larger size, no idea about Breeds yet I'm hoping to have 3-4 birds of a mixed variety which i will purchase with all the other bits i will need from a local supplier coincidentally in Luton
Then the fun bit starts |

| If you are building the coop yourself may I suggest a kickboard to stop the floor covering (we use wood shavings) spilling out? |

Something tells me with a plot that size and having waited so long to make the decision (or ok from OH) you may come home with more than 3 or 4 |

hi again, is your supplier Woodside by any chance? I got a few hybrids from there (mr fox paid me a visit and 3 of my best girls died from shock ~ gold laced orpington, buff orpington and a bluebell).
Have fun choosing and keep us informed of the first 4 you get and then the rest !!! |
