Got my first crop of potatoes off clay soil which was untreated today (not many plants or potatoes but hey I got some!), and the runners are growing like mad with all this rain! First time I have, as an adult, grown my own veg....Just dug over the potatoe plot and looking to see what I can put in now. I wondered whether to leave it now and plant a green manure for next year....what do you all think?

My friends and family say we're doing The Good Life Very Happy My response is...as long as I look like Felicity Kendall I don't mind Wink Laughing

Browneyes, I don't know it it helps but I've noticed that not even the farmers round here are getting a good crop of sweetcorn this year. It needs a lot of sunshine which we didn't have in July. The other thing it needs is to be planted in a block (9 in a block of 3 by 3 is about minimum) in order to get good cobs. This is because the flowers are fertilised by the wind.

You probably know all this anyway - if so, sorry. Laughing

Ditto Kate's point about planting sweetcorn en masse. The more the merrier, and you'll notice your yield will rise dramatically for it.

Have you come across the small, blue sweetcorn varieties? Terribly exciting for kids (and big kids too!) to grow for a change. Sorry I can't remember the variety's name offhand.

And congratulations to Laura - she's done far better than us this year for veggies!

Well done Laura!

Craig dug some potatoes from the garden for tea tonight. Can't get fresher than that! No air miles, just a little shoe leather!
