I read somewhere that red mites don't like cedar wood and it was suggested cedar perches may be a good deterrent (also tobacco leaves)
Anyone got any ideas on this one?
I have ordered some cedar oil that I will put on the ends of the perches as a deterrent.
What do you think? |

Cedar wood balls are used to keep clothes fresh & to keep moths away, so there may be some truth to it working.
Some people have also said they never get red mite in cedar wood coops. |

| I was trying to buy cedar wood, to make my perches out of, but the sources that I did were very expensive. I have never had red spider mite, probably just lucky, which was why I looked in to Cedar,as an extra precaution, however the perches get wiped down with a solution of white vinegar, and though ive never seen it mentioned as a preventative, it may be a possibility the red spider mite doesnt like us because of that!!! hope so!! |

Thats interesting Bhindi, what gave you the idea to do that if you have not read it anywhere else? |

A lot of websites doing a search: vinegar disinfectant, will quickly reveal its a cleaner and disinfectant, apparently kills 99% bacteria, 82% mold, 80% viruses (germs), and its also a fungicide. I unfortunately can confirm the latter, as working with children, 1 which has just had a bout of impetigo and kindly passed it to me, wiping vinegar on it, stopped the itch and healed it very quickly. The lad unfortunately had to have fucidin, which is I believe femaldehyde, as my cranks corner solutions in a school wouldnt go down to well.
Anyway getting back to your point about using it for redmite despite not reading the suggestion, I have come across references about it detering ants, and thought i have nothing to lose by giving it a go.... as i like cleaning the coop with it. |
