Does anybody else do a bi-annual headcount of their birds? I forgot yesterday (visitors) so did it this morning - 170 plus 10 guinea fowl. Oh dear, see what happens when "it seems a pity not to fill the incubator". The first of the bantam marans eggs have gone in for fertility testing this morning (before I did the sums).

Leaving aside those for which I have no matching males, the tally is LF & Bantam Fayoumi, Marans bantams, Friesian Fowl, Nankins, Welbars, Cream Legbars, White Wyandotte bantams and Brown leghorn bantams There's a large and varied selection of bantams of varying purity; most of the LF are pure breed or hybrids, but I buy in eggs of the former so that I don't have to keep LF cocks.
Realising I'd increased the flock by more than 20%, I've even remembered to notify defra, so for the next ten minutes or so I can feel virtuous!

Of course you need a trio, a drake needs plenty of wives and then you can breed your own flock.
