Looking through the threads on here there seem to be a lot about red mite and lice. Can I check that I am checking them properly as I don't think I've had a problem yet - I don't want to miss anything!
In the coop I have shavings which are dusted with lice/mite powder. I put newspaper on top of this which is changed daily (not the shavings). There are about 4 inches of shavings in the nest box, again with lice powder in them. Every week I stir all the shavings and puff in a little more powder.
Once a month I change all the shavings and apply a 10% solution of Poultry Shield, in the evening. I spray everything until it is soaking, put newspaper down and then put fresh shavings in the morning when it's dry.
On the chooks themselves I check Florence everytime we use the purple spray on her. The others hate being picked up and I'm worried about stressing them in the chase so they only get checked every couple of weeks or so. All I do is lift a few feathers and look to see if there's anything on the skin.
I haven't noticed any lice/fleas/mites so far but now I'm wondering if I'm not looking hard enough?
I also put lice powder in the dust bath which they love.
I hope I'm checking them properly! |
