probably a silly question but both of my chickens still seem to be moulting, especially around the top of the head and their neck. Can they get sunburn on exposed skin and is there anything I can do to prevent it? I don't want to have to deal with roasted chickens if I can help it |

Yes they can. One of my first ever chickens was badly feather pecked to the point of having bare skin on her back end I thought the red skin was from the pecking, but the vet pointed out it was sunburn and advised I keep her in a covered run, or where there was lots of shade, until her feathers grew back (but you try getting a chicken to sit in the shade )
He didn't recommend putting anything on it - but I did put some jojoba oil on as it softened the skin and also works as a mild natural sunscreen...

Jojoba Oil naturally protects the skin. Without any additives Jojoba reflects some of the sun's rays giving Jojoba a natural SPF near SPF 5.
Jojoba also forms a protective shield that keeps your natural oils and skin nutrients locked in.

Hopefully as yours is just a moult they won't be exposed too long and I personally wouldn't worry about it unless they were obviously getting red... |
