Mum had mad jack brood 6 eggs - only three hatched yesterday and this morning I went to see them but she was only sat one two of them and seemed to be ignoring the third. Well, we went up again just now and it was dead! Crying or Very sad

I was the only one brave enough to stick my hand in (not bothered about getting pecked!) but she didn't make a move towards me. So i exzamined the chick and, I dunno, it looked dead...but not. It was stone cold but no rigor mortis? And dead things' eyes sink into their heads but this chicks eyes were still full and rounded. So I tested for a heartbeat but couldn't tell if it was my own pulse or the chicks!

I'm a softie though so I took it back to my house and rubbed it and blew into it's beak and eventually it sort of, convulsed. Shocked Still wasn't convinced it wasn't my own wishful thinking but then it did it again!

After 30 mins in the incubator it's back from the dead! Chickens NEVER cease to AMAZE me! Very Happy

Did the mum accept it back, or is she still ignoring it? Confused

Oh I dont think we'll even bother with that - shes a scatty thing at the best of time - not a good decision for a broody! He's in a tub under the lamp next to my 4wk old ixworths for company. Poor little thing.

Oh well done. We had a little duck who was found 'drowned' in his water saucer and was given the kiss of life.

Here he is:

Grew up fit and well.
