has anyone used a product called Sundown Red as poultry bedding? I found it at my local feed suppliers.

It's an equestrian product that won an award for innovation at BETA in February 2004. It comprises of 50% large flake shavings and 50% chopped straw all soaked in Eucalyptus. It smells wonderful and I'm hoping the eucalyptus will keep the insects at bay.

Sundown Products

They also do a Sundown Green which is chopped straw treated with virkon. I'll be trying that as well as soon as I need more straw.

Sounds great - are the birds ok with the eucalyptus? All I can get here is wood shavings.

First Impressions,

The birds are ok with the eucalyptus (it even makes the car smell nice while transporting it). As it is 50% chopped straw it goes further than the wood shavings I had been using, and it's cheaper. A double economy.

I suppose the eucalyptus helps keep insects away not sure how to test that.

I must see if our localish people have it ~ if I can ever find the place again. Only been once and their map is rubbish. But would be intrested to try something different in the houses, especially if it keeps the flies away.

My sister in Brisbane, Aust has chickens in her garden and they roost in the gum trees. There's no problem with Eucalyptus there, and no bugs!
