A friend of mine has a pair of cuckoo marans - but their youngsters when hatched are - black pullets and cuckoo cockerels. Should they not be all cuckoo, as both parents are cuckoo?
Any genetics experts out there?
How can we get cuckoo pullets, instead of black pullets??
Many thanks. |

| I'm know nothing about genetics, but don't marans look different when they hatch ~ I think the boys are lighter than the girls, and I believe there is something to do with a line or a spot on the head. Sorry I can't be more specific |

| Both sexes carry the head spot - it means they have the barring gene. Feathersite has a couple of useful photos of Marans chicks and whilst I would dispute that the wing bar is obvious at 4 days, it does enable the sexes to be sorted accurately a little later. |
