You were given useful information on how to protect your chickens. If you chose to do none of them and simply allow your poor birds to be slaughtered, then for gods sake give them away and don't keep any more. It will be back time after time after time if it finds a sloppy poultry keeper who won't protect their birds properly as it takes advantage of easy pickings. |
The OP stated that the fox broke in. So they WERE doing something to protect their chickens. People can think they have done a good job, done the right thing, but still simply be human and make mistakes.
Once again you either ignore the facts, or don't bother to ask them. For goodnes sake, can't you give people the benefit of the doubt first? To jump to the conclusion that this immediately makes them a bad person, or a "sloppy poultry keeper", without finding out any more facts is simply wrong and rude.
I thought this was a friendly forum, where people could come for support, even IF they make mistakes with their poultry keeping.
I don't understand how you think your aggressive posting style is going to help people learn from their mistakes IF that is what they have done. |

It is just a distressing thing to happen when they were all couped up, but thats nature. I have now also set up some nets of hair around the runs, which i will have to keep building up i expect!
Thankyou everyone. |
honestly nets of hair, male pee and other things simply do not work. You have to have runs with 16 gauge wire placed onto concrete or slab runs so it cannot dig in, securely fastened doors and pop holes, solid wood or best of all electric fencing of some description. |

I am sorry, i don't think it is fair to assume that I am "sloppy" with how i look after my hens or to suggest that i am someone that "gives up and lets the fox return to kill more birds." It simply isn't fair.
It was a lucky escape the first time i posted, and that is why i have kept them in their runs since, as well as followed the forums helpful advice. It was bad luck that the fox broke in, it is the time of their cubs after all. I dont feel it appropriate to suggest im laying out my poultry on a plate with salad on the side. |

| We have had hens for over 15 years and this is the first time a fox has managed to break into the hutch. |

Ben and you obviously just rub each other up the wrong way and are BOTH outspoken, age does not come into it , I think it best to leave it at that and agree to disagree for now |
I'd be minded to agree. The OPs posts weren't totally clear what had happened, and it's easy for misunderstandings to occur, and for language to come across a lot harsher than someone intended, and it's very easy to respond to that by typing in that quick reply box at the bottom and click submit rather than thinking what you're saying to someone else.
I think it's best that everyone stand back, count to 10, and realise that you're never going to agree, and just keep it non-personal. As long as it remains non personal it's a debate. Once it becomes personal, it's a slanging match and the thread will be locked. |

So sorry to hear of your loss Nugget ~how are the rest of your chickens? I think we are all aware that it is coming up to one of the worst times for foxes as they have cubs to feed as well. So we must all do as much as we can. And I'm sure you have tried to do as much as you can, otherwise you wouldn't have posted about your loss on here.
Take care |
