| No way Nanny P. My parents have always wanted to move to France too. Actually I think we were somewhere near limousin last year on holiday. The name seems to ring a bell. |

| I'm sorry I have no idea what you're talking about. Anyway, I don't suppose anybody does have any idea about Cubalya chickens do they. It's just I'm only planning on checking this forum for a day or two and need to know as much as possible in order to write a report. Any information about feeding habits, average size, common medical problems would be gratefully appreciated. I also have to look at the Andean Goose but I'm guessing this isn't the right forum for that. |

| Quote: | The Cubalaya is a variety of chicken from the Oriental class. The distinguishing trait of this breed is their long, broad tail carried at a downward angle. Developed in Cuba for cockfighting, in the United States and Europe they are now primarily kept as ornamental and exhibition poultry.

History
In the middle 19th century, the Spaniards brought to Havana, Cuba several varieties of Asiatic game fowl that originated in the Philippine Islands. The Cubans crossed the Asiatic breeds, and subsequently re-crossed them with birds of European origin.
These birds were then selectively bred for wide, extended tails and a curving beak, fierce eyes, and a courageous expression. In this manner the Cubalaya was created, independent from any scientific control. In 1935, the Asociacion Nacional de Avicultura (Cuban National Poultry Association) approved the breed. Their name was chosen in honor of the Republic of Cuba, which had patronized and refined them.
First shown in the U.S. at the International Poultry Exhibition in 1939, the Cubalaya breed is currently recognized by the American Poultry Association (APA) and the American Bantam Association (ABA).
[edit]
Characteristics
Cubalayas are characterized by their stately carriage; pea comb; abundant, flowing hackle feathers and long, well-spread tail carried about 20 degrees below the horizontal. They possess a friendly, curious disposition, are very heat tolerant and make excellent foragers when allowed to range. The hens lay small eggs and are good brooders.
The breed has been developed in standard and bantam size. Standard males weigh 4.5 to 5 pounds at maturity, with bantam roosters weighing around 26 ounces. The females are somewhat smaller.
Colors accepted by both the APA and the ABA are limited to black; black breasted red and white, though an array of other colors are found in the U.S.

| I have found out some limited information like that but I really do need some sort of information on common illnesses. If they are genetically prone to pick up particular viruses or hatch with certain deformities. |

Thankyou for the help. I have been out in the dark to give her some oats i hope she takes them is that what i should give long term? I wont give fish if thats not a normal thing, i thought thats what they ate. As you can see this has been a rather sudden addition to the family!
As for the cage dont worry she has a place to sleep at night attached. |

Sorry, we seem to have hijacked your post. A common ailment of this forum but not of the Cubalaya |

Cordyhutchfixer , no do not give her oats long term except as a treat , you need to find out her approx age - if she is older than about 16 weeks she needs to be on layers pellets , if younger then growers.
The best thing you can do is see if you can find a reference book in the library - something like Katie Thear's Starting with Chickens is very good or have a look Here for a basic guide about feeding .

| Am I wasting my time by asking people on here about the Cubalaya or has anybody got any information? I honestly have no idea what you are talking about with some naughty boys...I just know that I have a report to hand in for next week and was hoping that maybe this would be a place where I could find out some information. |

Sorry, we're so used to some of the members playing about!
Never heard of the chicken breed you mention. NannyP has probably given you the only info about it. |
