Hi Mark,

As I understand it; the current regulations have been brought in and exist only until the end of May. The government may decide to:

end the confinement early(please, please, please)
or extend the confinement after the end of May Sad
or at the end of May do nothing and we can let the chooks out to play Very Happy

All the best,
Andy

A bit worrying to think that France is now going to house their poultry. It's getting that bit closer to home! home

I wonder if our government will act sooner rather than later on this?

We are going to hurry along with our contingency plans, just in case the order is given. Confused

true but it more up to us even before the govement as we are in direct contact with them

Hi all,
Judging by the numbers (many thousands) the northerly migration of Grue (Cranes) must be nearly over. It's an awe inspiring sight watching them as they first gain height in the thermals and then spread out in V formations with the eldest at the front (watched a formation on Tuesday for as far as I could see them and the front 3 Grue never changed positions once and there must have been 2-300 birds in that formation - Amazing! Formations went over most of that evening and well into the night.
Saw the first Swallow on Wednesday and the first Redstart too!
Sorry to ramble on, but the point is that we have so must to lose if H5N1 does take hold.
Here we're seeing less and less chickens about, so the message is getting about (especially the 750 euro fine)!
Chuckingham Palace is well onto it's way to completion, just awaiting some transparent roofing and some tongue and groove - costing a fortune!
Egg production hasn't slipped yet, though I do get trampled when I go in their barn with a dish of noodles and rice!
Regards to all,
Mark

How are all your girls coping, they must have been in for weeks now. Are they showing any sign of stress?

Hi Jan,

Nice to hear from you and nice picture of highland cattle (I think). Are they yours?

I've just opened up the barn and given our girls their morning feed of fresh rice, they're certainly eating lots of food, but still producing the goods, 100% the past two days and about 90% plus for the rest of the time, so I guess they are still OK, I wouldn't say they're happy as if I sure if I wasn't carrying one of their bowls when I enter their barn, instead of showing their greed they'd be rushing out the door.

Their new quarters is still in production (awaiting more timber)! Whilst the "chucks" are OK, I'm getting on with a few other things, like building an extension to a house, continuing the convert and renovate the main house, build a polytunnel, plant 90 metres of double row hedging and get the summer crops in! You can tell we lead a busy life here, so the extra hassle the H5N1 regulations bring are a right pain.

Most of the locals (infact all those I know) with chickens have brought theirs inside to some degree.

Regards,
Mark.

Hi Mark,

Yes, the Highlands, Flora and Gladys are mine. Gladys has just had a beautiful heifer calf Very Happy .
It sounds as if your girls have plenty of room and I think that is the key to keeping them happyish. Not always easy to do if they are used to roaming.
You do seem to be very busy.We also never get a quiet time. One of my OH favorite sayings is 'Well that's one job we wont have to do again' but something else comes along that cant wait and bang goes the quiet spell.
Not complaining, love it really.
Don't suppose you listen to the Farming Program on radio 4 at 5.45am. Very dismal news this morning

You should be able to download realplayer and then you can go to the BBC radio 4 website and simply click on the programme you want to hear.
