Whilst mucking out today - I decided to check my feather footed birds a check to make sure they were collecting any mud balls.
When I picked Sumo up - I felt something squishy and strange.

I know this picture isn't very good but it's like a baggy sack of skin just below her knee/elbow at the back of her leg. There is one feather growing out of it. It is not an open wound nor does it seem to be full of any pus or anything like that. It's just like an empty bag of skin. And she didn't mind me inspecting it - so it's not hurting her. She doesn't have one on the other leg - so I'm wondering what it could be.
Does anyone know?

That is what crossed my mind too. It does look like it could have contained something. I will try and get a better pic over the weekend when I can get someone to hold her still for me.

Could be from an injury or an abcess, hard to tell in the picture.Isolate her from the others and put neosporin on it several times a day for about 4-5 days.If you can get a clearer picture it would help.

I don't think we have any called neosporin. What is it? I'll have to have a look for a UK equivalent.

Thanks

It is a topical triple antibiotic, for cuts and abrasions,it is good to put on wounds and will to some extent be absorbed into the skin.Sorry, forget you alls medicine is different than ours.It is bought over the counter ,without a prescription.

Right I have had another thorough prod about.

The area outside of the red ring - is all empty baggy skin.
The part inside the ring his a hardish lump - with the same sort of feel as a cyst.
There is no obvious holes or wounds. Although there are a couple of points where it looks like feathers could be coming through.
Do chooks get ingrown feathers like men get ingrowing hairs on their faces. Could that be it?

I've heard that honey can help draw out anything nasty - do you think that's worth trying until I get some antibiotic cream? Smuggler is it a human cream you are describing?

For drawing things out magnesium sulphate paste is good , as far as I am aware and looking in my OTC book (which is a year out of date admittedly) you can't buy antibiotic creams OTC in this country - only antiseptic / antimicrobial- something with Triclosan in is a good broad spectrum one of these .

yes - magnesium sulphate paste you should be able to buy at any chemist should you want to give it a try - but I think it has to be covered over to work which might be a problem ?

Sorry it took so long to get you an answer from my friend, here is what he said:

"It looks as though it might have at one time been some sort of blister or
something along that line. I would leave it alone for the time being and see
what develops. Keep an eye on it so that it does not become infected. If
feathers coming through this tissue will be stopped I would then remove it
and use an antibiotic ointment to try and prevent any infection."
