Could anyone hazard a guess as to the breeds of two of my girls. Or does anyone recognise them.
Lisa is the white one - and her previous owner thought she was a 'beechwood blue' but a google doesn't bring up anything so I am assuming it's a different/similar name. She is very flighty but very independent and energetic. To me she looks very similar to an araucana in shape and has ear tufts - but she doesn't lay a blue egg.
Morag is a gorgeous large but compact black girl with green red highlights in the sunlight. (similar in size to a RIR) She lays a medium/large pale flesh coloured egg. She is really forthcoming and adventurous in nature.
Any ideas appreciated! All my girls will have been identified then! |

Oh honey - hopefully not too much longer.
So what's on your list so far? If you concentrate on your dream - it will come true! |

I can't say what's on it, just in case it doesn't happen. My main problem is finding people who have at least 2 of what I want ~ as I don't like to take a single girl or she won't have a friend. But, the big stumbling block is that I don't usually want 2 of the same breed, unless different colours ~ like I had 8 pekins ~ but all different colours. Can only say top of the list are the sablepoots, I've wanted those for so long, even when I had the others, just didn't have a spare broody when the eggs were on ebay and didn't know anyone who bred them (I do now though!!!) Aren't those pictures so lovely?
Back to your thread ~ what are all the makes of the girls in the picture, by name please? |

That sounds like a good plan Summayah! You take your time and get what you want.
Yes the sablepoots are gorgeous! I first saw them on Nellie and Carries sight and have decided I would like a trio of the lemon ones, Then seeing rich and weegs photos I think a trio of porcelaines would be nice too!! LOL I need a HUGE mansion in the country!!!
The chooks in the photo are
Polly - Lavender Araucana (although she isn't very lavendar!
Harry - Lavender Araucana Cockerel
Lisa - unknown (supposed to be a beechwood blue - but in fact looks like polly but without the lavander bits)
Morag - again breed unknown
Elvis - Polish cockerel (was supposed to be a hen but started crowing when he arrived!)
Daphne - Orpington (think she's partridge but not sure)
Sumo - Partridge Brahma. ( A real softy, loves to lie in on a morning, and to watch her run - is hilarious!!
Poodle - Black Silkie - she is Sumo's best friend and they snuggle up together
Molly - The Maran (The boys love her!) And she is my suspect for the funny eggs
Frenchie - The vorweck (sp) she is quite flighty and timid.
Red is missing from the pic - she is a RIR - and she is the cheekiest and friendliest chook in the world!
The list above are my adopted chooks from sadmum plus I have my original 7 that although free range with the above sleep in separate quarters!! |

| I see your poodle is as unfeminine as my marmalade was. They just don't have the right hairdo do they? I was really worried at one time that it would be a boy because of the swept back hair, but shen she packed her bags she still had no comb or wattles, and having seen more recent pics ~ I stil think she's a girl. I just wish she'd get the right hairdo and do the job properly! |

ROFL maybe she was having a bad hair day! She has layed and been broody in the time she's been here - so there is no doubt as to her sex. (Unlike elvis ) |

Beechwood Blue rings a bell - but I've tried all my best Google moves and frustratingly I can't find anything about them either.
I do remember from old PP forum days (those old posts long since deleted now) much discussion about blue egg layers and the fact that the "Old Cotswold Legbar" name had been copyrighted. So some breeders were making their own crosses and giving them other names to use to sell their birds instead. As they were crosses, there was possiblity of a variety of egg colours, not just blue (as there is with the Old Cotswold Legbar).
The araucana looks would fit in with that theory (aiming for a blue egg) and the flightiness with the legbar bit...
That's the best I can think of - although it may be a complete red herring brought on my one-too-many cups of stong coffee this morning! |

I was thinking along the same lines as Lisa, as 'Old Cotswold Legbars' are now © copyright. Breeders who have raised their eggs are using their own 'breed names' for them.
As they are a new commercial hybrid, bred to lay blue eggs in quantity, there will be some lack of type. I've pictures of several OCL birds and they can be quite different. I'd guess if the looks can be different that not all would lay blue eggs either.
A good looking bird though, you can definitely see the auraucana in her.
Is it just that photograph or is morag crested? |

Ooh you two are a fountain of knowledge. Thanks for that info. So basically you think she may be Araucana x Legbar somewhere in her history? What you say does make sense now.
Excuse my ignorance Nigel - but what do you mean by crested? I can try and get a closer up pic later as I am doing the muck out today!

It's usually just a small tuft of feathers on their head - not as much as a Poland of course! |

How do the old cotswolds differ from the cream legbars? I looked at blue cotswolds on ebay.

Not really sure. Maybe the Cream Legbars are more consistant with type than the OCL? |

No wonder chicken keeping is so addictive. It is so complex and fascinating!
I wonder how many chickens you would have to keep in order to have a pair of each recognised breeds and hybrids. |
