I went Christmas shopping yesterday with a friend and he bought a book for his dad called 'The River Cottage Meat Book' by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall.
As well as being a cookery book it also contains a large amount of information on meat in general. How it's raised intensively, how it can be raised to provide excellent quality meat while minimizing stress and upset to the animal, how to find a good butcher and lots more.
I had a quick flick through the book yesterday and it looked really good. It's priced at £30.00 (it's a really big book!) but Waterstones have it at half price at the moment. There's a link to it on Amazon below for anyone who's interested, either for themselves or as a pressie for someone else.
The River Cottage Meat Book
Hope that helps/interests someone.

Is there much different in it to the River Cottage cook book ?
because I have that and it's fantastic! LOVE HFW anyhow since he did that programme that I can't remember the name of - where they cooked a placenta for a baby naming ceremony and served it to the guests |

Rich, I get the hint you're not a fan of Mr. Oliver?
Nor am I, but have to applaud his recent school dinners programme & the changes that have occured since.
HFW is a god in our household too. Have a number of his books, including the 'Meat' one, & love his TV programmes too. (just wish he'd get a haircut! )
Several of his books are available through Amazon, which will add money to the forums coffers if you buy from them. (not on commission, honest! ) |

My kids are lucky in that they have never in their primary schools been served anything but freshly prepared food. The reputation of school dinners here is great.
The school cook at the school I am based in is a wonderful lady, as well as cooking fresh healthy meals, she loves doing things with the kids. Today she spent time making gingerbread with the kids and each class made a Christmas cake to share with the community at the school concert. Tomorrow, primary 7 are serving Christmas lunch - turkey, chipolatas with bacon, roast potatoes, sweet potatoes, sprouts, parsnips, followed by sticky toffee pudding. The cook has organised the kids with making menus, dressing up, napkins, etc. They are so proud of themselves - and it is all down to her. |
