Do I need to Vaseline the girlies combs yet ? It is pretty cold out there !!!! 1.5º C this morning - now up to about 5ºC They have found the one sunny spot though so perhaps they are a little warmer Smile

I have heard of it, but never done it to my girls. It's supposed to help prevent frostbite on their combs. Wink

apparently their combs can get frostbitten - so putting vaseline on protects them ?
Bit like it stops us getting chapped lips I guess dontknow

it's supposed to help on the larger combed breeds like leghorn and leghorn hybrids from getting frostbite. We never put it on our WhiteStar last winter and she came through it OK and unscathed.

from what i can tell, the idea is that it stops condensation forming next to the skin which can then freeze when they come out of the box into sub zero temps, causing frostbite which can cause the comb to go black and possibly die and drop off! however I'd only heard about doing it to cockerals and not to hens.
