One of my birds has developed a breathing problem. Wheezing both in and out and stretching her neck up and gaping. Any ideas what I should do to help. Still eating a bit. I'm fairly new to poultry keeping and this is the first illness I've encountered.. Any help out there?

The gaping could be down to gapeworm, but I suspect that it is in attempt to get more oxygen in, abit like we do when we yawn.
If she's wheezy you really need to take her to a vet quite quickly, as she will likely need antibiotics to address the infection.
I hope that others will come and tell you more, this is the best I can offer right now. Good Luck

There is a thread in the Golden Nuggets area that covers respiratory problems. Here's the link:

I would call the vet asap. By the time they show you the symptoms...they are seriously ill. Sad

Yes - just to emphasise...
Take to the vet sooner rather than later - my Victoria (Peckham) really was struggling to breathe. The vet gave her an anti inflammatory and it did the trick within 1 hour, I'm not saying this will work for your hen - but generally when birds are at the stage where they are wheezing they need help fast.
Hope all goes well Wink

Thanks for your replies. Due to illness in the family I was unable to get my hen to the vet but I did isolate her and worm her with panacur and after a few days she seems to be much improved. She managed to escape her run and join the others but is back to normal as far as I can tell.
I'll certainly use the forum again if I get any more problems.
