Sam ate Lilly's second egg today and she has laid us another one today, this time 35 grams. So getting slightly bigger each day.

Ethel, My Maran laid her first egg yesterday. She was acting very strange and then at 4pm she laid it IN the nest box of the new house!! She's 6 months old, the egg weighs 35grams, (photos to follow), its not as dark as I thought but I remember reading somewhere they should get darker as they lay more ( is that right?)

Lilly, my Bluebelle, has now laid for 8 straight days and yesterday was a double yolker, although only 54grams.

I love my chickens. ( Just Emily, LS X Cochin to start laying)

Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Belated congratulations AC. So pleased you're finally getting some eggs Razz

As to the colour, when my Welsummer starts laying they do darken a bit in the first couple of days. Fingers crossed the same thing happens to your Maran eggs too.

Should I expect the Maran to lay her second egg today, or could she miss a day with the shock of first egg and all that!!

yesterday she laid at 4pm, but no sign yet of any today.

Well done with the new layer. It could be that she will miss a day, as it takes 25 hours to produce an egg, but by 5.00 it's getting a little dark now so she may well wait until first thing tomorrow.

I don't thing its the shock. Although I remember reading somewhere that for a chicken to lay an egg everyday (re the size and the amount of nutrients needed) was the equivalent of humans giving birth to an 8lb baby every day!! Shocked Shocked Shocked

I guess its more that the priority in breeding for the dark laying egg breeds has been the colour of the eggs, not the number of them (although I'm sure that is a secondary consideration for those that understand the genetics of it all).

Buffy, my Welsummer, averages 2 eggs every 3 days when she's at maximum speed and she did take quite a long break after her moult before she started again.

Have you had another egg from Ethel yesterday? If so, is it a bit darker?

Yes, she laid late in the day again. So that's 2 out of 3 days. I don't mind if she doesn't lay each day, as long as she is ok, ( i didn't want an egg bound chicken on her second egg!lol. )

It was slightly darker but noting like I have been expecting. I think it may take a bit longer then 2 eggs for the colour to darken.
