Don't know if you already know this...
Being only newly laid (so to speak) - I hadn't heard this before and didn't notice any comments anywhere else on the forum.
If your anything like me then you may have some of this lying around (I have a test tube of left overs on my kitchen worktop! )
Now I've seen this I'll be more careful washing hands etc and disposing of mixed solution...
Essentially Baytril is probably going to be withdrawn - certainly in America - don't know about the UK - my vet gave me some today! Pity if it is withdrawn - worked great for my sick hen
"The FDA’s decision on Baytril is the first time that a drug used primarily for veterinary reasons has been withdrawn from the market due to antibiotic resistance and human side effects. While Baytril is scheduled to be taken off the market for poultry use on September 12, 2005, Bayer still has 60 days to appeal the decision. The company maintains the drug’s safety record, but says it is looking into the FDA findings."
These web pages explain better than I can...

Interesting anyway... Better to be informed than not!

If it is the drug of choice pretty much everywhere it would make sense that resistance to it is building up, and its effects not being as good as they were. How many diseases in humans respond to bog-standard penicillin these days, for example? And it's sad to say that the world of animal farming has been pretty rubbish at controlling antibiotic use, using it prophylactically in many species and for many reasons other than controlling infections |

When I've used it, I have been given gloves by the vets. And I'm always careful to wash my hands afterwards. |

Bog standard penicillin still can cure a lot judging by the amount of it we give out !
though we do get get cross when someone has a really bad infection and the Dr gives them the lower dose as chances are they will be back the next week to get another lot - or if the give the 125mg amoxicillin suspension to an older child - it's that sort of thing which builds up resistance
I love making that stuff up - the smell is yummy ! |

I doubt you give out bog standard penicillin these days! It's all based on penicillin, but not the original version. Clever pharmacologists made modified versions that the bugs find harder to "deal" with. |

you are probably right there - I'm am only a humble dispenser - not a pharmacist or pharmacologist - and I only generally work there one day a week - but it does say pencillin on the big box we have to count them out of ??
Not that it really matters of course as long as whatever it is works ! |

| The class of drug is referred to as penicillin. Mainly to help with those alergic to penicilin. As for me, 'fraid my qualification is as a pharmacologist. |

Always thought you were super smart !!
We just dish the stuff out which really anyone could do with a bit of training !
Are you still involved in Pharmacology ? and also have you ever heard any Adam Kay & Suman Biswas tracks such as - Paracetamoxyfrusebendroneomycin quite amusing ! (especially for you I would imagine !) |

| No, came out of that stuff about 11 years ago, now. Went into teaching, then IT, now training. Strange path to follow... |
