An update on the 2 ailing chucks... Boo hoo!

The little hen Becky, with the swollen face - seems much better. Swelling has gone down. Very Happy The vet gave me Baytril for both of them and also injected for worms - just in case. They've since been tested for worms - none present - but the youngsters are still quite thin!

He said Coccidiosis was present and has ordered some medicine for them. Could this have caused little Roos condition?

The little Roo - still cannot stand - I really don't want to put him down but if he shows no improvement then it may be kinder. He is still eating and drinking ok. Has anyone else had this problem? Is it likely that he could recover or does it sound terminal - he's been like this 2 weeks now! I read a superb book (I highly recommend it to anyone who keeps hens To funny It's very funny) called 'Hen and the Art of Chicken Maintenance' . He had a hen that forgot to walk and after lots of patience (and a harness made from a pair of tights!) it got back on its feet...

Hi Debbie,

Sadly, you will find that with Marek's it slowly paralysises them. It is legions on the spine and they slowly cut off nerves. I have tried to keep some of mine going to see if it would reverse itself. No luck, they continually started to lose functions one by one...till they could no longer eat or drink.

It is a very hard decision to make, but the right one should be made, prior to the little roo suffering too much.

I'm sorry,
Deb

The Vet didn't think it was Mareks - although he didn't know what it was! Do you still think it may be? How soon would the other chucks show signs? Are there any other signs?

Sad to say, but there usually isn't any other signs of Marek's, besides doing a post mortem to look for lesions on the spine.

Marek's is an air-borne virus, so if you were going to have anymore come down with it....it would have happened. The little roo will need to be kept separate from everyone, even after death. Burying him will contaminate the ground for some time to come.

Usually, the two times my flock has gotten it, it runs through in about 3 weeks time. After that, if no others come down with it....you are in the clear.

Good luck. Let me know what you decide to do. If you do try and keep him around, use good husbandry skills when in contact with him and/or your flock.
