DH cooked tea last night and to our surprise when he cracked our large eggs open they both had a double yolk as our chooks have only just started laying is this normal i mean i know animals can have twins too but will they continue to lay double yolk eggs?  |

Apparently, it is very common for early eggs from new layers to have double yolks, although I haven't had any myself
What a nice surprise. |

As NannyP says, young hens occasionally produce these whoppers early on in their careers. I believe some hens will continue to produce them, but by and large they usually settle down to laying conventional single yolkers. Only a couple of mine (a Bovans and her daughter, a Bovans x Light Sussex) have ever laid doubles, and it's not unusual for them to start the season with a double after the winter lay-off.
