Its been a while I know, but I thought I'd give everyone in case you didn't know a wee heads up on this!

A Stormy Spell Of Weather For The Northwest
Issued on 18/12/2008 at 22:24
Valid From: 18/12/2008 at 21:30 until 20/12/2008 at 06:00

Regions affected:
Scotland

Areas affected in detail:
Northern Scotland, including the northern Isles, and western Scotland.

Severity level:
Level 3

Weather type:
Severe Gales

Alert risk period:
19/12/08 11:00 until 20/12/08 06:00

Alert details:
This is a Weather Alert issued by Netweather at 21:30 on Thursday 18th December 2008.

A deepening area of low pressure is expected to pass close to northern Scotland during the course of Friday and into early Saturday, bringing with it a spell of wet and potentially stormy weather.

A strengthening south/southwesterly wind on Friday morning will bring outbreaks of rain (and snow over the hills) in across western Scotland. These winds will become gale to severe gale force during the day, with gusts of up to 80mph expected over northern and western coasts and hills of Scotland during Friday afternoon.

During Friday evening, as the winds veer westerly, they could increase further across the Western isles, with gusts of up to 90mph possible here, and later in the night across the Northern Isles.

Winds of these speeds could give rise to the risk of high-sided vehicles being blown over, the risk of trees being uprooted and/or branches coming down, as well as bringing a risk of structural damage to buildings and distruption to power supplies.

Please take extreme care if you have to travel in these areas during the alert period.

Confidence: 80%

Ferries cancelled here for tonight and tomorrow, Sunday is under review. I can't remember when we had as many cancellations as we're having this winter!

We have a large wooden gate 10' x 8' which is hinged on metal with a bolt lock and was propped shut by two planks 4' long 1' wide and 2" thick, supposedly to stop 'play' in the wind.

Well........tonight the wind lifted the gate clean off the hinges and threw it two foot back!!!!!!!!!Shocked

It's still intact so friend contacted to assist in lifting it back into place tomorrow as it is very very heavy!!!!

Fortunately the aviary and chook house are in a protected area of garden so they are ok Rolling Eyes

Hope everyone is ok where they are, the wind has died here at the moment

It was rather wild here last night in Ness. Colin couldn't get past the house with the dog as the wind was too strong to stand upright. But thankfully no damage to the house or barn. The electric went off but was back on this morning so we had candles during the evening.

The mobile phone signal isn't back on yet, but we can live without that.

All quiet and calm here today

Hope everyone is OK
Regards

Tony & Colin Very Happy
