Nice. Are they destined for the freezer or breeding stock? |

Cor, they are as well
I've missed something, tell me the story. Did you fatten them or have you just bought them. |

Much nicer than the bigger, fatter Holsteins my landlord has. At this time of year his heifers are practically round I always think woolly cows look better.

Glad you like them
thanks for no fat jokes guys, they are just sturdy little ladies
They are Ruby Red Devons, I acquired them last October but couldnt move them to here until February due to BTV restrictions, no they arent for the freezer, yes they are breeding stock, no they arent in calf (yet) and yes, they are very fat Oh, and yes they behaved impeccably MM
They have not been fed at all since I got them, just were housed and fed rationed haylage until turnout at end April/ May then onto grass. Bright side, at least I dont have to feed them to get them finished (well, their offspring anyway) unlike Simms and Charollais (sp?) crosses which are popular around here
Milking simms..............hmm, not something I'd like to do, Friesans by hand in NZ were bad enough
Woolly is a good way to describe them Tim, I was thinking just that as the vet was clipping their necks for their TB test |

I am so pleased there are plenty of people on here who can appreciate what they are looking at
Nice cows (I think) what will you be "doing" with the ones that you get from breeding them? |

NannyP, if the calves are pure-bred then the females will either be kept in the herd or sold as breeding stock when they reach around 12 months old. The bull calves will be kept to be sold for breeding if good enough or castrated and go in the freezer when finished (that goes for the females too if they arent up to scratch)
If I cant get hold of a Ruby bull, then the resulting cross-bred bull calves will be castrated and go in the freezer and the heifer calves may do so too unless someone wants them as breeding stock
Hopefully, this will keep me in meat for a while though I'm going to have to wait nearly 4 years from now until the first ones hit the freezer |
