One of my girls was attacked by a fox yesterday yards away from where I was standing with them. He grabbed her and tried to pull her through a hole under the fence. During the day when I am out they are kept in a secure covered run but when I am there I let them free range in the garden as they seem much happier. I shall now have to re think this. My concern is for my poor chicken however. The fox managed to pull out all her tail feathers and she now has an almost completely bare bum. It all looked quite clean with only a small cut near to her vent which I have sprayed with purple spray. I kept her indoors all day in our conservatory and she was very subdued. I put her back in the run last night and she was feeding and drinking a little. Not a happy girl.I wasnt sure if a trip to the vet was in order or would just be further trauma for her. She is probably pretty sore. I am now dreading opening the coop this morning in case she has taken a turn for the worse or died. Poor girl. |

Poor girl!
If the shock hasn't killed her overnight & there are no wounds other than the one you've treated (including internal ones) then with a bit of TLC she should recover.
Fingers crossed. |

| Thank you for your kind support. Marge seems to be doing well. I opened the coop in the morning with some dread and she was the first to pop out. She was feeding well yesterday and gave no sign of any problems. No egg from her yet so obviously had a big shock. None of the others seem to be taking any notice of her bare bum or the small cut by her vent, which I am watching for signs of infection. I think the purple spray has done its job well. Mind you its a bit like adding insult to injury, to have lost all your tail and now to have a big purple bare bum! She was itching to get out of the run all day so it doesn't seem to have made her nervous but it has me! |

That's good news.
Better to have a bald purple bum than have it pecked by your other girls though, which they're inclined to do! |
