I hatched out in November 3 Light Sussex (i think 2 cocks and 1 hen), 2 RIR (i think 2 cocks) and 2 RIR x (i think 2 hens). I bought a total of 24 eggs from different sellers on Ebay and that was all i had hatch. I have also hatched a pair of Silver Grey Dorking (the cock bird is very pretty), and about 4 bantams (Aracana, Sultan, Black spotted Hamburg,) which i am going to sell as i have decided to stick to the Larger bird. Does anyone know about putting splash cockeral with another maran, the bloke who i got the eggs from said you can mix them around and the result is good?? I bought the eggs on ebay and the pictures of the birds looked really nice. The Salmon are beige/cream bodies with grey spekled heads and tails. The splash are cream/white with blue/grey dots. The stripey ones look like either Welsummer or Cream Legbars, the pale one looks like Light Sussex ... and the golden one like a LS cross. Anything white or pale plumaged will be yellow(ish) as a chick for example. You'll have to wait and see Layla! Once hatched they were really strong birds. Does anyone have any trouble hatching due to the membranes being tough. Absolutely, yes. I've been working with Copper/blacks for years now, and they really are a little tricksy to incubate yourself. The membranes seem thicker and leatherier than my other breeds. Humidity at time of hatching is even more important than usual - I prefer using broodies for this breed in particular, as hens are much sweatier than my incubator! It's reached the point that now we try to incubate so a Copper/black hatch will begin on a Saturday, then giving us a 48 hour window when we can keep an eye on the incubator and help any through which are struggling. Am very adept now at using tweezers and nail scissors to extract chicks that are stuck in the shell / membrane! We DID help one out, but the other 2 died in shell The remaining 2 he gave us didn't develop fully.
