Part 1.
I heard a story today about a lad's 10 year old python that sleeps on the bottom of his bed. He feeds it on rabbits but for a while now it lies rigid stretched out like a pole on the bottom of the bed refusing to eat and is getting thinner and thinner.
why ? |

well there's the urban myth possibility that the snake is waiting till it's big enough to eat the boy.
Or, if this is a real problem then it's probably because the snake isn't getting the right environmental conditions considering it's not being kept in a vivarium. |

my sister has a vast array of reptiles including a reticulated python almost 20feet in length. They do required very specialist care and if the animal is not warm enough it will not feed.
The boy in question should contact an organisation like Proteus who are willing to help with advice etc. in situations like these |

Part 2.
The boy is one of my daughters pupils and he was very upset yesterday
in school. He has had the snake for 10 years he took it to see the vet
and the vet explained that the python was starving itself ready for a BIG
meal so spot on Vikki. The vet insisted that he put the python down immediately to save the boy's life.

I am horrified and would be wondering what sort of vet would put an animal down just because it was not recieving the correct care in the correct place
What on earth were the parents of this boy thinking in a) allowing the vet to kill the snake and b) allow a large python to sleep with a child
I'd be reporting the vet and asking a lot of questions as to why this was allowed to happen
With a little research a place more suitable could have been found for the snake, which I am sure would have be a happier solution for both the boy and his 'pet'.
Sorry for ranting, but as a reptile keeper myself I cannot believe something like this can happen and that a vet would so easily take an animals life
I'll go back to my cupboard now
Keep smilin

I've heard this story so many times recently - I'd be extremely surprised if it was true.
Snakes do not have the mental capacity to project far enough into the future to starve themselves for a big meal.
Any vet would suggest putting the snake into a vivarium with the correct conditions (which would also 'protect' the boy) rather than euthanasia, there are many vets who are not knowledgeable about reptiles - but I would be amazed to find one that ignorant.
I think your daughter is passing on a story - either that or this boy heard the story and decided to pretend it was his snake it happened to.
| Quote: | So, after Easter service some of my friends and I were talking about creepy stories. Then S. said that she had a really good one. So she started to tell a story that will change the way you look at snakes…forever…..
Samantha knows this lady who owns a snake.(Gross level 1) To be more specific she owns a boa constrictor. She loves this snake. This snake is her BABY.(Gross level 2) What I am about to say might disturb you but, please keep reading.
She loves this snake so much…..she let’s it ….sleep…WITH her in HER bed.(Gross level ..um..1 million!!) (Stupid level..BRAINLESS) Well, she has owned this snake for 6 years.
After awhile she noticed that her precious snake wasn’t eating. it almost looked as if it was starving itself. she also noticed that at night the snake would not coil up. Instead, it laid stretched out beside her. She immediately thought her baby was sick.
So, she took it to the vet. She told the vet all of the ’simptons’ her snake was having. The vet told her that the snake must be put down immediately.
She didn’t know what to say. “Why?’ was the first thing she managed to muttered out. The vet said calmly” your snake is planning….on eating you..” the lady was stunned “What do you mean!?!?!”
“See, snakes are smart. If they know they have an opportunity for a larger meal they will starve themselves. And if the meal is dead the snake will MEASURE its body to the length and the meal.
After 6 years of sleeping with a 120 pound thing that dosen’t move for 8 hours and smells like chicken (not literally), i guess your snake loved you more than you loved it……… |
