hi there, we had a grand asparagus harvest this year. Our first year since we inherited it when we bought this place. We left quite a bit to go to seed as we were told to do. It's like a big bush now, beautiful to look at but making a lot of shade. Shoukd i be cutting it down now? When? Ever? To what height?
Thanks |

Hi Patch, Welcome to the forum. I don't grow sparrow grass but my book on veggie growing says to cut down in autumn once the ferny stems have turned yellow. Leave the stumps about 1 - 2" above soil level. Before the spears appear in the spring make a ridge of soil over the row and apply a surface dressing of fertilizer.
Hope this helps. |
