I thought it might be useful if we had a list of what people use here in France for medication for their poultry, treatment for poultry and coops and sterilizing equipment. Also where to buy might help, i.e if you can only get from vets or widely available in places like Gamm Vert.

Good idea???? Do you think it would be better to have seperate threads:
Medication
Treatments Poultry and Coops
Sterilizing
OR just leave under this heading??

emmy what sort of headings would you like....ie deseases/accidents/viruses or ie broken limbs/ breathing problems/loss of feathers.....do say what you would like and we can all discuss

I think leaving it under this heading.....otherwise it may become confusing, since there is Poultry Clinic look specifically at diseases etc.

Just the French names for meds, wormer, tonicsI would have thought.

Whether French or English chickens, they all suffer the same types of disease and accidents.

em i think Emmy sounds much more feminine..........the thing is if you have a query post it.....there are no silly questions .....only silly answers(most from me)........also if you have a smattering of french visit your local aviculture club or visit a show ........most clubs are only to willing to help newbies

Yep I can ask the questions if I know what they are in English and it doesnt involve technical. I do speak French and also most of the neighbours here keep chickens but I am not sure that their ideas and mine will coincide. Are clubs not for people keeping specialist hens? I just want egg laying poo machines living a healthy and happy life (although I fell for the pictures of the Silkies but am not looking for more pets so NO!!!) I would hate to go along to a show and it be like a dog show with all pedigrees being prettified etc.

Theres even someone on here who keeps calling me "Mum"!!! Laughing

I use Flubenvet bought off the Internet delivered to friends in the UK who bring it over as most suppliers won't post wormers to France due to French laws - same for horse wormers.

I had previously asked at the vets and at the pharmacy (who stock verterinary products) and there does not appear to be a wormer that can be used on layers or that has no egg withdrawal period. The first wormer I used from the vet here had an egg withdrawal period of one month, after which they moulted and I didn't get any eggs for several months Evil or Very Mad

I don't worm as a matter of course, but do have some Soluverm (Piperazine) in the fridge. I bought it at the local pharmacy for 7,59..and it last until Nov 2009.

I used it when Mrs Trousers seemed to be suffering gape worm.

I did notice the other week, that our local vet has Flubinvet on the shelves, but didn't ask about it as I don't need it at the moment.

Interesting that Flubenvet is now available in France. I wonder how the prices compare, "there" (via internet) vs "here" (via vet).

I currently only use Vermex; it's organic, although I don't know if it's approved by the French organic association ... it IS in the UK.

However, if I had obvious problems that weren't being solved by Vermex, I'd go for Flubenvet as it has no egg withdrawal time ... agree with Lisleoise about the scarily long withdrawal with "standard French wormers". Rolling Eyes
