| Sorry a bit late Mojo but well done on your show successes and hope you are now recovered from what must have seemed a very long weekend. What breeds did you get placed? Any chance of some photos? |

Hi all, there is a show i am hoping to get to at Blond[87] sometime early ithink in Dec.I will be looking for 2 hens that lay blue or green eggs. Could anyone help by telling me , i know the Cream Legbar lays blue, but what other breed of chooks am i likely to see that lay these colours, also any additional info, like looks, mixing with other breeds etc, thanks.
Oh and what sort of prices.

Hi Petal..most shows do not sell POL hens ...expos in france are basically competition shows with some stock for sale .....all of it pure breeds .....not hybrids..........your best bet for coloured egg hens is to visit french poultry websites choose the birds then contact your local aviculture club or leboncoin website(animal section)...........there is not as many different breeds available over here.....most egg providers are marans plus many assorted farmyard fowl...........post in the birds wanted section stating where you live...pure bred fowl start at about 20 euros and after that sky is the limit but farmyarders cost about 6/8 euros in the market......good luck

| Hi - for blue egg-laying 'pure' breeds you need to look for araucanas. Not sure what these are called in France but there may be some breeders over here. The Cream Legbar is another 'pure' breed laying the blue eggs. Numerous hybrids exist and dare I say it but a lot of the Cream Legbars are not entirely pure. Admittedly they look like the 'pure' fowl but invariable are not. The only sure way of proving their reliability is to breed them yourself and breed their progeny for a couple of years plus. If they breed true to type then fine but if they produce chickens different in type etc to the parents then you have a mixture somewhere along the line. Might be worth obtaining eggs in the Spring from a reliable source and hatch some chicks. Best of luck. Jan OH Richard. |

Thanks both for replying. Quite a lot to think about there. Mojo, excuse my ignorance, if they aren't POL, do you mean they are selling old birds?[this must be what you mean i came home once with 2 Brahmas for the occaisional egg, when i checked the leg rings they were 4 years old!] It d
idn't matter they are lovely anyway, no eggs though!
tuzo2k, i dont want really to try hatching eggs, the cockeral problem, i already have too many! I have looked at both breeds and like the look of both. Also, i am addicted to getting new chooks, so will come back with something, normally something no-one worth their salt would touch with a barge pole, hence the above story and a Silkie cockeral! How can anyone fall for that!
Thanks both, again any advice always appreciated. |
