Hi everyone,
I hope you can help me. My two new bantams have very bad crusty, scaley leg mites. (they are in a pen on their own). I have treated them with vaseline for the last 3 days but it doesn't seem to be clearing it up very quickly. As i am going away on holiday on Thursday, i would like to sort this out before i go if possible. I have some pipettes of frontline that i use for my German Shephard. Could i use it on my bantams and if so how much and where do i apply it? I can purchase a frontline spray from the vets, would this be better and spray it directly onto their legs but how often would it need to be done? The other chickens are showing no signs of it. I would appreciate your help if you can. Thanks.

I have silkies I just use one drop either directly onr
to each leg or on bare skin under a wing you could put some vaseline on to soften the scales but in some cases you have to wait for the next moult before they look better hth

I would do all your birds as it does for lice too

Benzyl Benzoate is fantastic for scaley leg mite, brush it on with an old tooth brush, then smear vasaline over the top, you might have to wait for the scales to grow back properly after a moult, but the legs should make a full recovery, Benzyl Benzoate is about 1.50 from a good chemist. xx

I like benzyl benzoate too. It works really well and isn't so sticky that it picks up all the cr** off the ground. When you buy it from the chemist it is usually for scabies (human mange) so you may get some funny looks, but being a chicken keeper that shouldn't worry you! Laughing

Yep I always used BB, spray with frontline now once a month as a precaution, and touch wood nothings appeared.

Thanks for all your advice. I have no idea if i can get Benzyl Benzoate from the chemist here but when i ask for any English medication, they tap it out on their computer and give me the Spanish equivelant. As i live on the outskirts of a small town, it will go round like wildfire (and we have lots of those around here in the forest at this time of year) that the only English woman that lives in La Palma has Scabies.....! Thanks for that...! Embarassed

I reckon that maybe i will do as Gilly says and use the Frontline now and put some BB on my shopping list when i go on holiday to England on Thurs. Many thanks to you all though but i get enough stares in the town now as i drive a right hand drive car and i don't think they've seen one of those before here so having scabies too wouldn't get me many friends. Laughing

Mmmm. Yes, I can see you might engender some wonderful topics for the gossip mongers there. I had a picture in my mind of you marching into the spanish chemist clutching a scaley legged chicken and asking for benzyl benzoate whilst gesticulating at the chicken - I guess that would mean a visit from the men in white coats......... Sudocream works wonders, just plaster on daily and they soon have nice, smooth legs Very Happy

Yeah, sudocrem works well too, but do you find it makes them a bit "sticky" Elly? it's terrible stuff to wash off, gets a bit claggy. but it does work, what's the spanish for sudocrem? haha! Laughing

Sudocrem, believe it or not. We can get it here. I have persisted with the vaseline and frontline under wings and it's now Thursday and their legs seem much better. (been about a week though) Thanks to you all. They had black legs for a few days as everything got stuck to them, muck and even straw. The scales seem to have peeled off, leaving lovely cream legs again. Thank goodness i got it sorted before i went away and hope everything will be fine until i come back. Friends looking after them but i still worry....... Anxious
